Reporter Rich Mauer was born in New York and grew up in the Bronx. He became intrigued with journalism while a Vista volunteer in Caldwell, Idaho, in 1968.
Mauer served as editor of the Colorado Daily at the University of Colorado Boulder and graduated from Boulder with the journalism degree in 1973.
He worked in Colorado at Grand Junction Sentinel; in Boise, Idaho, at the Idaho Statesman; and at the Miami News in Florida before joining the Anchorage Daily News in 1983.
