Reporter Tom Kizzia was born in Washington, D.C. and moved to Alaska after graduating from Hampshire College in 1975. His first job was managing editor of the Homer News. During that time he also built a cabin, worked as a commercial fishing deckhand, and wrote freelance from Homer for publications including the Alaska Advocate and the Washington Post.
Kizzia went to work for the Anchorage Daily News in 1982. He has covered crime, resources, state politics and rural Alaska, among other topics. His 1990 book, The Wake of the Unseen Object, remains in print with the University of Nebraska Press. It was based on a series about rural villages, Northcountry Journal, published by the Daily News.
