Police were investigating a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the university district that sent a man to a nearby hospital, but detectives were saying little about who was involved or what led to the gunfire.
The man called 911 to say he had been shot about 1:15 p.m. near 42nd Avenue and Dale Street, police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Officers found the victim outside, but it's unclear if that's where the shooting occurred, Parker said. An ambulance rushed the man, who was reportedly shot in the leg, to a hospital about a half-mile away in serious condition, the police spokesman said.
"I don't know if that is the full extent of his injuries or not," Parker said. "He went into surgery as soon as he got to the hospital ... He was in pretty rough shape."
Police have not named the victim nor released any description of a possible suspect.
Officers swarmed the area, north of Tudor Road and within a mile of both the Anchorage Police Department headquarters and two hospitals. Police shut down 42nd Avenue between Dale and Piper streets as officers went door to door looking for neighbors to interview.
Crime scene investigators later marked at least six small pieces of evidence in the middle of 42nd Avenue and also took pictures and recorded video. Detectives and a state prosecutor examined evidence at the scene and declined to comment.
Late Tuesday, Parker said the detectives continued to investigate and were not releasing more information.
