Literary

Laundry list

Brendan Jones, commercial fisherman, and Wallace Stegner, fellow in the Creative Writing Program at Stanford University, will discuss and read from Jones' novel, "The Alaskan Laundry." The Sitka-based author has had work in the New York Times and on National Public Radio. The book is described as a combination of "gorgeous" writing and "a page-turning adventure," not to mention "an evocative exploration of the meaning of home." Jones will speak at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus Bookstore. There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and Sports Campus West Lot.

Storytelling

Bear truth

The 24th conference of the International Association for Bear Research and Management will kick off in Anchorage with Bear Stories at Bear Tooth Theatrepub, an evening of bear tales for members of the public and some of the more than 400 bear experts coming to town for the conference. The event, coordinated by volunteers from Arctic Entries, takes place at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Bear Tooth and tickets are available at beartooththeatre.net.

Drawing on the wall

Ted Kim may finally have found a canvas big enough to accommodate his intensely busy illustration style — a whole wall at Dos Manos Gallery, 1317 W. Northern Lights Blvd. Kim's show, "The Age of Trash," also includes several framed pieces displaying his combination of precise lines and whimsical imagination.
