Farm Fresh in Anchorage, just in time for Mother's Day

Sunday is Mother's Day and there's nothing moms love more than an open air Farmers Market. Well, there may be other things moms love more, but why not give mom a reason to get out this weekend, enjoy the warmer Anchorage temperatures, and pick up some locally-produced foods and crafts? As luck would have it, three of Anchorage's five open air Farmers Markets -- the Anchorage Downtown Market & Festival, Anchorage Farmers Market and South Anchorage Farmers Market -- will all open for the season on Saturday, May 11, the day before Mother's Day.

The Anchorage Downtown Market & Festival, sans Saturday Market, has become a summertime staple in Anchorage. Now in its 21st year, the Saturday Market will kick off the unofficial start of summer market season on Saturday, with its official opening. The market is located on the corner of E Street and W 3rd Avenue, in the Moose Hollow parking lot, and runs May 11-Sept. 8 on both Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The South Anchorage Farmers Market, at the corner of the Old Seward Highway and O'Malley Road, in the Subway/Cellular One Sports Center, will run on Saturdays only*, May 11 through Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This market will feature food, flowers and goods from a variety of local vendors including Glacier Valley Farm, Gray Owl Farms, Alaska Sprouts, The Blue Poppy and Arctic Choice Seafood. The South Anchorage Farmers Market accepts credit and debit cards.

The Anchorage Farmers Market, located at the corner of 15th Avenue and Cordova Street in the Central Lutheran Church parking lot, will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until mid October. Vendors include Arctic Organics, Turkey Red Cafe, Aurora Nursery, Persistent Farmer, Fee's Seafood, Bushes Bunches and Seldovitch Farm.

Prior to the start day of the for-mentioned markets, the Spenard Farmers Market will hold its annual fundraiser party Friday night at the Tap Root Public House. Admittance is $10 a head, but the fee goes to a good cause, namely to support the volunteer run community market in Spenard. Music will be provided by C Note String Band, High Lonesome Sound and Anchorage based singer-songwriter Michael Howard. Note: This event is for moms and kids 21 and over only.

As for the remaining two open air Farmer's Markets-- the Spenard Farmers Market and The South Anchorage Farmers Market* at the Dimond Center-- we won't have to wait long. The Spenard Farmers Market, which sets up in the parking lot of Chilkoot Charlie's, will begin Saturday, May 18, running 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday until Sep. 28. The South Anchorage Farmers Market, located behind the Dimond Center complex and in the front of the Dimond Center Hotel, opens July 18 and operates on Wednesdays only* from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Sept. 25.
