The first class of Drug Abuse Resistance Education students at Bear Valley Elementary School graduated last week, according to Anchorage police. The 10-week program educated 66 fifth-graders.
Ten APD officers teach DARE in Anchorage-area elementary and middle schools.
The program, which started in Alaska in 1997, has now expanded statewide, with officers in Anchorage educating hundreds of students last year. The purpose of DARE is to teach students how to avoid the dangers of drugs, gangs and violence.
