Sen. John McCain said the nation will be watching "with great interest" Sarah Palin's future as she returns to her job as Alaska's governor.
"She is one of the best campaigners I have ever seen," McCain said in Tuesday night in his concession speech at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, "and an impressive new voice in our party for reform and the principals that have always been our greatest strength.
"... We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican party and our country."
A faint chant of "Sarah! Sarah! Sarah" came from the mostly subdued crowd, and as he spoke, Palin -- standing onstage with her husband Todd -- fought back tears.
Palin, McCain's surprise pick as a running mate left the stage with McCain without addressing the crowd.
