'A Wolf Called Romeo' author signing
In the book, Jans chronicles the unlikely tale of a six-year friendship between a wild, yet oddly gentle black wolf and the people and dogs of Juneau. When a lone black wolf ambled into view not far from his doorstep one evening at twilight, Jans would finally come to know this mystical species as he never thought he would. At first, people were guarded, torn between their "shoot first and ask questions later" instincts. However, as Romeo began to tag along with cross-country skiers, play fetch with local dogs or simply lie near Jans and nap under the sun, they came to accept Romeo and he them.
