ANCHORAGE- MARCH 24, 1989: The Exxon Valdez runs aground on Bligh Reef, spilling nearly 11 million gallons of North Slope crude into Prince William Sound.

MARCH 12, 1991: Exxon, the U.S. Justice Department and the state of Alaska reach an agreement calling for Exxon to plead guilty to four criminal misdemeanors and pay $100e state and federal civil lawsuits against the company.

APRIL 24: U.S District Court Judge Russel Holland rejects the proposed $100 million criminal fine, saying it does not adequately punish Exxon.

MAY 3: Last day for state and federal governments to withdraw from sif they find it is "not in the public interest."

MAY 4: Deadline for Exxon to pull out of the civil settlement because the criminal plea bargain was rejected.

MAY 24: Deadline for Exxon to tell Holland if it will withdraw its guilty plea to criminal charges. Holland on Wednesday allowed Exxon 30 days to decide when he rejected $100 million fine as inadequate.
