ANCHORAGE- * The plaintiffs in the trial against Exxon include fishermen, Natives, municipalities and Native corporations. The plaintiffs are asking for a total of $15 billion in punitive damages and $1.5 billion in actual damages.

* In Phase One of the complex, three-phase trial, a federal court jury decided Exxon and skipper Joseph Hazelwood acted recklessly in the tanker grounding March 24, 1989.

* Phase Two is under way and being heard in both federal and state courts:

In federal court, a jury is listening to biologists and economists discuss the actual damages the fishermen suffered as a result of the spill. Closing arguments are expected Monday.

After jurors consider the fishermen's damages, they will hear testimony about the Natives' claims for actual damages to their subsistence lifestyle.

In state court, a different jury began listening to testimony Tuesday to determine the amount of actual damages Exxon should pay Native corporations and municipalities for unpaid bills and damage done to property.

* During Phase Three, the federal court jury will go back to the issue of punitive damages and decide what Exxon should pay all the plaintiffs.
