Exxon Shipping Co. president Frank Iarossi was a familiar face in the early days of the spill. He represented the company before hostile crowds at daily public briefings in Valdez. It was Iarossi who disclosed the day after the spill that investigators had ruled out mechanical failure as a cause and were focusing on the actions of Capt. Joe Hazelwood, Third Mate Gregory Cousins and helmsman Robert Kagan. It was Iarossi who disclosed a day later that Exxon was aware Hazelwood had a previous drinking problem. A week later, Hazelwood was fired after blood tests showed he was legally drunk when tested hours after the grounding. A year after the spill, Iarossi resigned to become president of the American Bureau of Shipping, a nonprofit corporation that classifies ships for insurers, inspects blueprints during construction and surveys vessels to make sure they are seaworthy. He still has that job. "What we need to do is to try to develop much more of a safety culture, the mentality which is very much safety-oriented on the part of the management of shipping companies and ship operating officers," Iarossi told the Business Times of Singapore in October.
