Body of man missing in Chena River in Fairbanks found, identified

Fairbanks authorities have recovered and tentatively identified the body of a man seen falling through ice on the Chena River last weekend.

Fairbanks police Lt. Dan Welborn said the discovery of 26-year-old Roy Michael Anthony Omiak's body, near First Avenue and Cushman Street, was made at about 7 p.m. Monday. No signs of foul play were found at the scene, and Omiak's next of kin have been notified.

Police first received reports at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday that a man had been spotted incapacitated near the Cushman Street bridge over the river. A second call, minutes later, reported that the man had walked onto the ice and fallen into the river. An official search for the man was suspended Sunday night.

According to a statement from the City of Fairbanks, three residents initially reported finding the body on the banks of the Chena, with Fairbanks firefighters initially responding.

"Fairbanks police arrived on scene and the body was removed from the river," officials wrote. "The victim was tentatively identified from photo identification found on his person as (Omiak)."

The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage for an autopsy and positive identification.
