Anchorage Museum Guided Tours

Join a museum docent for a guided tour and learn about Alaska's gold rush, landscape painting, indigenous people and more. Ascent 20,320: Science on the Slopes of McKinley

Until the mid-20th century, climbing McKinley was a rare feat undertaken in the name of science. Using historical images from the National Park Service, this exhibition sees the mountain through the lens of scientific expeditions, from the first successful summit in 1913 to today. Photographs document the first successful summit in 1913, attempts to establish a high altitude scientific camp at 18,180 feet, National Geographic Magazine expeditions and more. On view April 6 through Sept. 30.

Ask The Naturalist

Ask a naturalist questions at the Eagle River Nature Center. Stop by and chat with our Naturalist stationed at the large viewing deck (1/2 mile walk on the Rodak Trail) to get answers to your questions about Alaska animals, plants, and more. We'll also have a telescope set up and loaner binoculars available for viewing any wildlife that might be in the area. "Ask the Naturalist" will continue throughout the summer on the 1st and 3rd Sunday. Free; $5 parking for non-members.

Bear Presentations at AWCC

AWCC staff will give an educational and interactive presentation in front of the Kodiak Cub's enclosure. This bear is slated to travel to his new home in Sweden early this summer, so join us as we share info about who he is, where he came from and where he's headed!

Bradford Washburn: Glories Of The Greatland

The majestic exhibition of Bradford Washburn's black-and-white Alaska landscape photographs is back by popular demand. Washburn (1910-2007) was an expert on Alaska's mountains and glaciers, a brilliant photographer and America's leading field cartographer. This exhibition features more than 40 images taken in Alaska between 1930 and 1979 by the aerial photography pioneer. On view April 27 through Sept. 2.

Co-Ed Adult Kickball League Registration Open

Athleticism NOT required! Grab your friends, family, or co-workers to form a kickball team. Teams must have a minimum of 10 players, with at least 3 men and 3 women per roster. League runs June 4-August 2. Games are played on the Delaney Parkstrip and may be scheduled on Monday through Thursday evenings from 6-10pm. Registration is open from May 1 through May 31. Registrations can be taken at the Fairview Recreation Center. Hours of operation M-F 11a-9p, Sa 12-5p, Su 10a-3p.

Guided Mushroom Foray

Twenty registered participants can join a guided mushroom foray at the Eagle River Nature Center. Diane Pleninger and Chris Maack will teach you how to identify and distinguish the edible morel from a false morel. An introduction to mushroom collecting is followed by an 2-mile walk on Nature Center trails. Note that harvesting is not allowed on the Rodak and Albert Loop trails. Limited to the first 20 people who register at 694-2108. Free program; $5 parking for non-members.

Magic: The Gathering Booster Draft Tournament

For a booster draft tournament, the players buy a box of boosters and play from packs out of that box. Extra Lands are available. You keep the cards you play with. Draft requires 8 or more players! If 8 people show up, we do these. Usually we get at least 8. Bring your friends just in case. We don't have these on any day when we are having another Magic tournament or other large event.

The High One: Reaching The Top

Climbers from across the globe come to test their mountaineering and wilderness survival skills through the high altitude challenges of Mount McKinley, the continent's highest peak. This exhibition looks at climbing Denali, "The High One," through the gear (historical and the latest technology), the routes, the risks and the rescues. Explore how and why people climb through artifacts, photographs, films and hands-on activities. On view through Oct. 21.

The Rwanda Project's Through the Eyes of Children Photographic Exhibit

Out North Contemporary Art House presents the traveling photographic exhibit "Through the Eyes of Children," which is a collection of photographs taken by the children of the Imbabazi Orphanage in Rwanda. Many of the photographers survived the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Opening night reception is Friday May 18, 2012 from 5:30-7 PM

True North

The North has long worn the romanticized mantle of a sparsely populated frontier. To outsiders, it can seem unchanging and marginally inhabitable â€" vast, cold, white, empty. Seen from the inside, however, the North is magnetic and multidimensional. This exhibit portrays a North that is complex and in transition. Photos, films and multi-media by more than 40 artists from Iceland, Scandinavia, Canada, Russia and the United States, including many Alaskans. On view May 18 through Sept. 9.

VPA performs THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL

This is the poignant story of Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in a three-room flat in Houston, Texas. Fearing that her presence may be an imposition on others, and chafing under the watchful eye of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Watts imagines that if she can get away and return to her old home in the town of Bountiful, she is sure to regain her strength, dignity and peace of mind.

The Palmer Senior Citizens Center, Inc. d.b.a. Mat-Su Senior Services provides transportation to local Mat-Su area grocery stores and/or shopping centers every Wednesday and Friday. Plugging into Energy Savings

This workshop is structured to provide students with an overview of the benefits of and how to reduce energy consumption through conservation over measures that cost money. There is discussion on how to measure electricity usage, and the concept of "vampire draw" versus active use. Eleven efficiency challenges are explained and demonstrated to students in order to understand specific actions that can reduce energy usage.

Finding & Fixing Air Leaks

This class includes a discussion on reasoning behind why a home needs to be air tight. This how-to workshop provides information on normal areas of air leakage, techniques for air sealing and air sealing products. Visual examples of specific air leaks and methods for sealing are provided, as well as samples of the actual products.

1st Friday "Holy Beasts" show at Fire Island Bakery w/ Ted Kincaid

If you have wanted an original Ted Kincaid painting but did not have the space, now is the time to come out. This is his first solo show of the year, hosted at scrumptious Fire Island Bakery, is a series dedicated to smaller paintings (roughly 2'x 2') depicting some of Alaska's wildlife rendered in his signature child-like line-work. Great chance to bring your date down, show them how sophisticated you are by indulging in some great baked goods, live music and by one of Anchorage's Fine artists.

Alaska 2012: Celebration of Wildlife Art

Opening Gala for summer long exhibit featuring premier wildlife artists Alaskan based work. The Gala is free and open to the public and will include a no-host bar and catered refreshments. Antto Melasniemi On Solar Kitchens

Antto Melasniemi is a hospitality and culinary expert renowned for projects such as pop-up restaurant HEL YES! in London. To mark the opening of the "True North" exhibit, he's opening a solar pop-up kitchen June 2 on the Anchorage Museum lawn. In this lecture, he discusses the technique behind solar cooking and his experiences launching pop-up restaurants around the world.

Festival of Flowers

This art exhibit is comprised of photos taken by Hutu and Tutsi children injured and orphaned during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. These are the culmination of 12 years of photographic workshops that started with 19 children living in the Imbabazi Orphanage in Gisenyi, Rwanda. The slaughter of civilians by civilians in the Rwandan genocide occurred at a rate 3 to 4 times that of the Holocaust. Photography has served a key roll in the documenting of the atrocity and as a way to reunite children with their families - rarely has the power of the camera been in the hands of those affected most.
