Letters to the Editor

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/9/12)

Fans of all things 'wimpified' are taking over our showcase events

OK, so now the Iditarod has wimpified the race and plans to detour the Happy River Steps just like the Iron Dog race wimpified last year and paused the race because of inclement weather.

EPA administrator's voice is a welcome one on resource issues

I was pleased to hear that Alaska's EPA regional administrator Dennis McLerran is in town as a keynote speaker at a conference (Alaska Forum on the Environment).

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/9/12)

State officials should remember where their responsibilities rest

There is no misunderstanding about the proposed change of the Department of Natural Resources mission statement as reported by the ADN early last week.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/9/12)

Support school band, orchestra

The school board is considering eliminating sixth-grade band and orchestra, an extremely short-sighted maneuver. Studies have shown that students with music education do better in standardized math tests. Music teaches patience, co-operation and study skills.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/9/12)

Donated clothes must go to needy

I am concerned about the end results of clothing and household items donated to various agencies in Anchorage. I believe that many donors want their gently used items to go to people who need them, but I have heard that clothing is sometimes shredded into mechanic's rags or discarded in other ways.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/8/12)

American products warrant the support of US consumers

We have a choice to buy goods that are made in United States.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/8/12)

Our schools should meet children on their own terms

I understand the support for "common core standards" in education and I also understand the need for innovation in a post-industrial society.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/8/12)

The solution to the carnage on highways: more troopers

This is concerning the Alaska State Troopers -- we need more of them! There are so many dangerous drivers on the Sterling Highway. Why should there be so many accidents involving moose? Because people will not slow down.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/8/12)

Mortgage idea puts burden on those who do right thing

President Barack Obama wants taxpayers to fund refinancing underwater mortgages. Of course, only if it was not the owners' fault and only if they didn't buy more than they could afford or weren't trying to flip the house for profit

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/8/12)

Closed-minded Prevo supporters hypocritical on equal rights issue

I believe churches should not be exempt from municipal taxes, while they are receiving the same protection (fire, police, etc.) as businesses and home owners.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/7/12)

Parents should have a choice of what school their kids attend

As a former educator I believe in school choice. It is the right of parents to choose the school they want for their child.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/7/12)

Knik bridge is a logical step in the development of Anchorage

In response to Julia O'Malley's "Knik Bridge seems tenuous at best" (Feb. 2), I suggest we consider the down side of not having another route into and out of Anchorage.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/7/12)

Patient appreciates the care

We don't hear a lot of "atta-boys" for those in the local trenches doing the so-called everyday work. On a recent Sunday morning I met a group of them -- " The Dirty Dozen" crew of Engine 12 of our local Anchorage Fire Department, and their cohorts, the crew of Ambulance 12.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/7/12)

What are corporations anyway?

If corporations aren't people then what are they?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR (2/6/12)

Central Park wilderness issue highlights misplaced priorities

Too bad our Legislature doesn't come with a warranty. I am certain we Alaskans could get our money back for this current one.

Kristof: Even fourth graders feel the power of social media unleashed

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof tells the story of 14 fourth graders who used the Web to move a movie studio.

Friedman: Glow of democracy, pit of fear

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman finds both joy and foreboding in the democratic awakenings from Moscow to Damascus.

Brooks: Obama caught in his own technocracy

New York Times columnist David Brooks finds Obama the technocrat is a demoralizing force of uniformity.
