Alaska officials say both state public health laboratories have been authorized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to issue final confirmations of swine flu cases. Bernd Jilly, chief of Alaska's public health laboratories, says having the ability to test for, and confirm, swine flu will save critical time in making diagnoses of the potentially deadly flu.
The labs are located in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
Officials say there have been no confirmed cases of swine flu in Alaska.
Swine flu sickened a cruise ship crew member recently aboard the Serenade of the Seas, which was in Alaska, but the illness developed outside the state, so it's not considered Alaska's first case.
