The director of Anchorage Opera's twin bill of "I Pagliacci" and "Sister Angelica" is also the director of a hit musical that's been filling houses in New York for the past two years. When's the last time that kind of heavy-hitter did a show in this town?

Concerts for good causes are not news, but the upcoming jazz program headlined by Jeff Golub and Rick Braun caught our attention for several reasons. Golub's previous appearances in town as part of the popular "Guitars and Saxes" shows have tended to sell out. His elegant, enticing style and cool passion has a lot of fans here. His latest CD, "Avenue Blue," shows him stepping out to explore blues, so this concert -- 7 p.m. Friday in Atwood Hall -- could prove particularly interesting.

Almost 100 years after the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is still a moonscape of ash and volcanic rock, without a tree or shrub in sight. The valley, located on the Alaska Peninsula where the Aleutians hook on to mainland Alaska, is a silent reminder of the power and potential of Alaska's volcanoes.

While in Washington state on family business last week, I swung into the Seattle Art Museum to see something exceedingly rare: real drawings by Michelangelo. What I mean by rare is that I've never seen one of these things in person; in fact the 12 chalk sketches loaned from Italy for the museum's "Michelangelo Public and Private" temporarily double the number of the artist's drawings in the United States.

For those of you who have been waiting to find out if Bob Boyer will be selling his wonderful greenhouse apples again -- he is -- but only from 1-5 p.m. today. I hear it's been the best year yet for apple production. The last time I checked, Boyer was growing about 37 apple trees, nine peach trees, three apricots, two plums and one quince tree inside the greenhouse. His orchard held over 100 fruit trees including apples, cherries and pears. Although he doesn't heat the greenhouse, the trees inside do much better than the trees outside.
