In the First Friday Rambles online last month (adn. com/artsnob), I lamented missing the opening of Peggie Hunnicutt's "Ring Around the Color" show at Doriola's. The coffee and lunch shop at 510 W. Tudor Road, which is regularly open from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, had closed by the time I got there on a Friday evening.

The show, consisting mostly of watercolors, will remain on view this month, however. The subjects tend toward still-lifes, like the small image of glass objects shown here. I was particularly smitten by "Art Beats," which features a copy of the Anchorage Daily News turned to this column and what appear to be scarlet gladioli.
Galleries were split on whether to have their First Friday openings on the Fourth of July or this coming Friday. A moot point for the Rambles, since I'm deep in the Chugach for the weekend. But Artsnob is still open for business. Look for Maia Nolan's review of "The Head That Wouldn't Die," and post your take on any performance or art shows you've caught lately.
First-rank fiddler
Violinist Alec Lindsay, who will start his junior year at West High School next month, is spending the summer as concertmaster of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in Michigan. Earlier this year, Lindsay won the concerto competitions sponsored by both the Anchorage Youth Symphony and Anchorage Civic Orchestra. He's attending the elite music academy on a full-tuition scholarship, by the way.
The orchestra is directed by Jung-Ho Pak, who has been a guest conductor with the Anchorage Symphony, most recently in January, when he led the orchestra in Dvorak's Cello Concerto featuring soloist Alisa Weilerstein.
