RAINY DAY CONFESSIONS
Mark Dinkel, who farms off Fairview Loop near Wasilla, said even his customers are sharing their tales of woe about growing things this summer.
Nonetheless, he said, the zucchini at his place is growing nicely. He has a special going for shoppers who buy four zukes: get one free. They run about a pound each. That's five for $10.
He'll also have tomatoes, pickles, potatoes and broccoli at the Wasilla Market today, Wednesday at Northway Mall, also today; Palmer Friday Fling; and downtown on Third Avenue on Saturday.
GLOBAL WARMING?
That's Mark Rempel's question.
"I still do not have tomatoes," the Butte-area farmer wrote. "The propane bill to grow them this year will probably eat all of the profit."
But, he said, the peas like it cool. This week he will have the first sugar snap peas, the kind with the edible pod, not shelled peas. His broccoli and new potatoes will also be available along with carrots, Snow Apple turnips, three kinds of lettuce, green onions, zucchini, squash blossoms and another 20 or so other veggies at the Northway Mall and the South Anchorage Farmers Market on Saturday.
WAITING LIST FOR HOGS
Alex Davis is accumulating names of people who would ike to have a fresh hog for the freezer later this year.
He orders and feeds them to butcher weight and will sell whole hogs or sides. You can reach him at 1-907-746-0038.
Davis will be at Northway Mall today and the South Anchorage Farmers Market on Saturday.
He'll have three types of Cranberry Ridge Farm Cheese. Eight-ounce packages go for $15. As for produce, Davis has broccoli, kohlrabi, vine-ripened tomatoes, three types of beet greens, spinach, rhubarb, fresh eggs, homemade jams and goat cheese.
