Mystery maven welcomes RV women

They call themselves RVing Women, and their passion is adventurous road trips in self-sufficient rigs. One tour lit out from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on July 25 to cruise the long but limited highways in and out of and throughout Alaska.

This month, their travels will bring them to Anchorage for a couple of days. What do 35 women wrangling their motor homes up the Alaska Highway most want to do in our fair city? They want to meet author Sue Henry, of course.

Henry's crime-solving heroine, Maxie, regularly rolls from one mystery to the next in her RV.

Henry will welcome the women at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the University of Alaska Anchorage bookstore. The store will stay open late to accommodate the event, which is open to everyone.

Local architects get international notice

Wallpaper, a high-tone London magazine dedicated to architecture and design, announced its list of 50 "up-and-coming" architects last month. Among the six U.S. firms was Anchorage's Mayer Sattler-Smith. The magazine described the multidisciplinary firm -- which consists of Mary Ellen Read in addition to founders Klaus Mayer and Petra Sattler-Smith -- as "devoted to creating structures that make the most of the extreme northern climate, working on a range of scales, all the way down to furniture and even graphic design."

The magazine's Web site featured the home of Valerie Phelps and Peter Burke, overlooking Turnagain Arm. The home was featured in a Daily News story in 2005.

Installation gains fresh relevancy

After the Alaska State Troopers report of shocking and shameful waste of some 120 caribou outside Point Hope last month, we returned to the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center to take another look at "Circannual Rhythm," the installation by Michael Joo.

Joo's replicas of ghostly, floating caribou carcasses, fitted with video cameras, seemed more poignant than ever. With the grand-opening crowds out of the way, the display is more conducive to thoughtful viewing and the accompanying videotapes projected on one wall can be more fully encountered.

Joo's installation will remain up until Sept. 21.

Also at the museum: John McIntyre, one of the best traditional (and sometimes not-so-traditional) Yup'ik artists, is scheduled to demonstrate carving techniques from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Aug. 10 as part of the Yup'ik science exhibit.

Elsewhere: A show of new work by Inupiaq artist Aakatchaq, reviewed in the Daily News on July 20 and originally announced as ending today, will remain on display through August at the Alaska Native Arts Foundation Gallery, Sixth Avenue and E Street. Several of the pieces are mask forms created using caribou skin.

Governor wants your nominations

We repeat this for those who may have missed the notice last month: Nominations for the 2008 Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities for individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves in service to the humanities will be accepted through Aug. 29. To nominate a candidate, visit the Alaska Humanities Forum Web site at www.akhf.org.

The recipients will be honored at a banquet Oct. 23 at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown.
