Waylon's band to support Alaska kids

While recording in Nashville not that long ago, local country chanteuse Brook Faulk worked with the musicians who formerly backed up Waylon Jennings. One thing led to another, and Faulk sweet-talked the late Outlaw's gang into joining her for a concert in Anchorage next weekend. The performance will be a benefit for the Shriners Children's Hospital.

The show is billed as "A Tribute to Waylon Jennings." It will draw heavily on the "outlaw" music that Jennings rode to musical immortality and in which, many years later, Faulk found inspiration. But since nine of the 11 tracks on her first self-titled CD were originals, we'll expect to hear some of those too.

That's good, since it may be a while before the home crowd can hear her again. Her career is regularly dragging her to warmer places. After Anchorage, she has stints in Texas (Austin, San Marcos, Luckenbach) and Taos, N.M. Check her Web site and hear samples at www.reverbnation.com/brookfaulk.

Faulk will share the band and the stage with Ken Peltier -- possibly Alaska's most popular country crooner and her frequent partner when she performs locally -- and national recording artist Tommy Townsend, another friend from the Nashville circuit.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in West High School Auditorium. Tickets cost $20 and are available at Eddie's Sports Bar, 6300 Old Seward Highway; Alaska Shriners, 1930 E. Northern Lights Blvd.; Silva Saddle on Tudor Road; and VFW Post 9981 on Old Seward Highway. Al Aska Shriners stress that 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the philanthropic group's Portland Hospital, which treats a number of Alaska kids -- at no charge.

Stick up for Alaska

For the third year, Duck brand duct tape will sponsor the "Stick or Treat" Halloween costume contest of homemade ensembles that require no sewing.

Starting Aug. 18, entrants can submit a color photo of their one-of-a-kind costumes made from duct tape. Entries will be posted at stickortreat.com, which is also where you go to see the rules. Winners will be announced on or around Oct. 29. First place will receive $500 and a year's supply of duct tape. (The company may not have realized how much of that the average Alaska household goes through in a year.)

Entries will be judged on "workmanship, originality, use of colors and quantity of duct tape used."

Last year the laurel went to a guy from Wisconsin, who used multiple colors to dress up like a tape measure. Not bad, but we think one or more Alaskans can beat that get-up; after all, we're ground zero for duct tape balls and wearable art shows.

'Russian Party' kicks off season

The Russian American Colony Singers will present a program of singing, dancing, snacks, dessert and wine to celebrate the opening of their new season. The "Russian Party" will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 2222 E. Tudor Road.

The group has made a reputation for polished performances over the past few years. Its 2008-09 season will be built around a cultural exchange project between Alaska and the Russian Far East. In September, the Alaskans will travel to Vladivostok for the Music Without Borders Choral Festival. In May, they'll host a Vladivostok singing and dancing ensemble, Zabava.

Tickets are $40. Make reservations by calling 230-0280 or 694-9602.

Arts council plans Friday teleconference
