Last Saturday, Valley farmer Ben VanderWeele gave away broccoli at the South Anchorage Farmers Market.

Now it's lettuce, according to market manager Arthur Keyes. He said VanderWeele had so much fun handing out broccoli that "this week he has a field full of head lettuce he wants to give away."

The drill remains the same.

You need to go to www.south anchoragefarmersmarket. com to get the details, but subscribing to the newsletter at that site is a first step. A coupon can be printed out that's good for a head of lettuce. There are also recipes.

The market opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m.

MORE VEGETABLES

Duane Clark has peas aplenty and will have them at all the Anchorage markets Saturday and both markets open today.

He reminds shoppers that while the peas are tasty fresh, they also freeze well for the cold days ahead when something green will look pretty good.

Speaking of freezing, Mark Rempel says this is the time to stock up on vegetables that will freeze in the fields soon: zucchini, peas, beans and pickling cucumbers.

Also at his farm and the markets this week, brussels sprouts, fennel and parsnips.

Those items and many more will be at Northway Mall today and the South Anchorage market Saturday.

MORE TODAY

Fresh produce is also at the South Anchorage Farmers Market today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. behind Dimond Center.

A&M Farms will have strawberries as well as tomatoes, zucchini, cases of broccoli and cauliflower, new potatoes, cabbages and lots of peas.

Stockwell Farms has two kinds of kale and other veggies too.

ON ICE

Cade Smith at Fisherman's Express in downtown Anchorage has Dungeness crab on sale for $9.95 per pound. That's all legs and claws. He also has other types of crab available, from snow crab to Russian blue king crab. Prices range from $31.90 for what he calls Captain's Reserve.

The Captain's Reserve legs, Smith says, weigh in at two-thirds of a pound.

Of course, he has all manner of salmon, plus cod, scallops, shrimp and halibut.
