Susan and Philip Burch
Susan and Philip Burch were married Aug. 18, 1968. They met at Emporia State University in Kansas after Philip had served two years in the Navy.
Both studied music education, and by happy coincidence, Susan enrolled in a string methods class Philip was teaching while earning his master's degree.
While Philip began a string program in Emporia public schools, Susan opened a piano studio in their home. Both shared an interest in teaching young people about music, and they soon started a musical family: daughter Heather and sons Riordan and Ian.
In August 1984, Philip and Susan decided to stretch their limits and create a better, more adventuresome life for themselves and their children. They resigned from their Kansas jobs and, with three children and two trucks, moved to Alaska. Philip enjoyed a long career as the orchestra teacher at Chugiak High School and Mirror Lake Middle School, while Susan taught music at Chugiak Elementary School and later coached choir at Gruening Middle School. Both received the Alaska Music Educators Award for Excellence in 2006. Besides teaching, Philip performed in the Anchorage Symphony and Susan in the Anchorage Concert Chorus, and both were church musicians.
Susan and Philip, both retired now, live in their renovated home in Eagle River. They have shared a lifelong interest in remodeling and have built/remodeled several properties in their 40 years together. Their yearly summer trips, complicated by Philip's health, have included traveling from Florida to Nova Scotia and the U.K. to Australia, with several stops along the way, on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The most recent trip included family and friends of long standing meeting at a warm Tuscon apartment during a cold Alaska spring.
For their 40th anniversary, the couple invited family and friends from all over the country to come to Alaska for a three-day party complete with salmon bake and homemade wine. Granddaughters Hazel and Ainsley provided a costumed chicken dance with a little help from their parents, Michelle and Riordan Burch. The Rev. Jan Richardson offered a blessing for the couple and their friends while matron of honor Auntie Janet Barker raised the toast. The dinner music came via Ian's iPod and included big-band, classical, country and folk -- in keeping with the couple's lifelong professional and personal love of diverse music. Philip and Susan remain grateful to God and look forward to each precious day.
