The Alaska Pro Musica trio will perform at 4 p.m. in the UAA Fine Arts Building Recital Hall, in advance of their tours to Dillingham and Kenai. They'll play music by C.P.E. Bach, Richard Strauss and contemporary composers. Tickets are $17 general admission.
Flutist Laura Koenig and percussionist/marimba man John Damberg will present the next Anchorage Festival of Music soiree at 7:30 p.m. in the Steinway Piano Gallery of Alaska, 637 A St. (at Seventh Avenue). Their program will feature jazz, classical and new compositions. Admission is $25, $10 for students and seniors.
Next week, Koenig will return with other festival regulars -- Dawn Lindsay, violin; Linda Ottum, continuo; Juliana Osinchuk, harpsichord -- for another soiree, a program of music by J.S. Bach and sons. Same time, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12. Same location, 637 A St. Same admission (see previous). A very different sound.
Pioneer book wins award
Jane G. Haigh's biography of one of Denali's most colorful pioneers, "Searching for Fannie Quigley" (Ohio University Press), won second place for scholarly nonfiction in the recently announced WILLA Literary Awards. The book is a fine example of dogged historical digging. The award, sponsored by Women Writing the West, will be presented in San Antonio this month.
'Kaleidoscope of Beads'
The Alaska Bead Society show, with demonstrations and a free make-it-or-take-it table, continues from noon to 6 p.m. today at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. The associated exhibit, with work by 50 artists, continues through Nov. 16.
