It seems as if more groups than usual are asking people to join them as performers, contributors or helping hands. Here are a few that have come to our attention.

MUSIC
The Alaska Sound Celebration chorus outperformed 10 other groups to win first prize at this year's convention of Region 13 Sweet Adelines International in Spokane, Wash. The chorus consists of 70 or more women from Anchorage and the Valley, formed when two existing Sweet Adelines women's barbershop-style groups -- the Anchorage Sourdough and Top of the World choruses -- merged last year.
According to a press release, it has been more than 15 years since an Anchorage chorus last brought home the gold. As Pacific Northwest regional champions, the Alaska chorus will advance to international competition in Nashville in October 2009.
The group hosted a free performance in Discovery Theatre on Saturday; more at adn.com/artsnob.
Sound Celebration welcomes singers of all ages for auditions; previous musical training is not required. In addition to weekly rehearsals focusing on vocal technique and showmanship, weekend master classes are conducted by professional instructors several times a year. Interested women are invited to attend rehearsals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Wayland Baptist University, 7801 E. 32nd Ave. For more information, call 566-3987 or visit alaskasoundcelebration.org
VIDEO
The e-mail telegraph is passing around a note from Mark Teague of Los Angeles, who says he's producing a show on Alaska for the Discovery Channel for its Alaska Week and is "looking for hot video from Alaska."
By "hot" he means animal attacks, rescues, police shootouts, fires, explosions, "glaciers falling/people falling off them/people being rescued from glaciers" and other such moments of natural drama or human terror.
You can contact Teague at 1-323-785-7374 or markt@ cherisundae.com. But before you send your best stuff to him, send it to me and 100,000 of my closest friends at adn.com/video, where there's a link for downloading interesting Alaska footage to the Daily News site.
VISUAL ARTS
The International Gallery of Contemporary Art is seeking volunteers to sit the gallery during its open hours. Ideally, a volunteer will choose one day a month when they will be responsible for sitting the gallery.
Other volunteer opportunities at the gallery include helping artists install or take down work prior to each First Friday opening, carpentry, maintenance, posting fliers, cleaning and helping out with public relations.
To volunteer or to learn more about volunteer needs and opportunities, contact igca@alaskalife.net.
Find Mike Dunham online at adn.com/contact/mdunham or call 257-4332.
