For those who are still looking to plant, stop by one of the local farmers markets for the assistance you need.
Featured at the Anchorage Farmers Market this week will be bedding plants, tomato plants, hanging baskets, perennials and fertilizer for gardeners. For those just looking to pick up some items and not to plant, there will be fresh arugula and basil from Arctic Organics, plus local cheeses, ice cream, rustic breads and other treats.
If you're looking to satisfy your oyster craving, Northern Lights Oyster Co. from Homer will be at the Anchorage Farmers Market at the corner of 15th Avenue and Cordova Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday featuring fresh Kachemak Bay oysters -- $14 a dozen for medium-sized oysters and $17 a dozen for the larger ones. They also will have fresh frozen black cod ($13 per 1-pound package) and fresh frozen halibut ($9).
Other vendors at the market will include Johnny Moose Farm, L&R greenhouses, Bushes Bunches, Aurora Nursery, Sun fire Farms, Turkey Red Cafe, AD Farm and Three Bears Farm.
At the South Anchorage Farmers Market at the Subway/Cellular One Sports Centre, Arthur Keyes is looking forward to an ever-improving selection for visitors.
"Last weekend we had a good market, and I expect this weekend to be even busier," he says. "For veggies, the market will have fresh Alaska grown oyster mushrooms, mixed baby greens, storage onions and potatoes. As well as essential oils, bedding plants, flowers, fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, fresh Alaskan fish, jams and jellies, hanging strawberry baskets and also barbecue ribs."
Expect these vendors: Gray Owl Farm, with flower baskets and containers; Blue Poppy, with lots of beautiful perennial poppies; Heart of the Mountain, with herbs, vegetable starts and flower starts; Arctic Choice, with fresh Copper River salmon, halibut, cod, sidestripe shrimp and other options; French Oven Bakery, with some fabulous baked goods; Glacier Valley Farm, with potatoes, carrots, onions and honey.

There more than 20 varieties of herbs, several tomato and pepper choices and many berry plants, including blackberries, raspberries, currants, blueberries, lingonberries, bear berries, gooseberries, chokeberries and kiwis.
