Of course, food is always on the minds of the moviegoers at the Bear Tooth, but this week it's been special. The Bear Tooth is hosting the Alaska Local Food and Film Festival and the grill is preparing specials made with local ingredients brought in from the Valley by AK Root Sellers

There are still two opportunities to catch a movie about what we eat -- "End of the Line" is showing at 5:30 p.m. today and "Food, Inc." is showing at 5:30 Thursday.

If you've been inspired by the films or want to stock up on local produce as the growing season winds down, a few farmers markets are still up and running as this unusually pleasant autumn continues.

Sarah Bean from Arctic Organics says they have nearly all their vegetables out of the ground. And this week is the time to start filling your pantry with potatoes at the Anchorage Farmers Market (15th Avenue and Cordova Street). Arctic Organics will have German butterball, yellow Finn and Yukon gold potatoes in 5-pound bags for $12 and 10-pound bags for $22. All those, along with pimpernel, russet and a mini-mix, will be available by the pound.

Other items at the Anchorage Farmers Market this week include tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, leeks, rutabaga, red and Chioggia beets, onions, broccoli, winter storage cabbage, red cabbage, kohlrabi and daikon. Greens available include mache, mizuna, collards, mustard greens, rainbow chard, kale (green, redbor, Red Russian, and Toscano), various leaf lettuces and a greens mix.

Additional vendors at the market include Seldovitsch Family Farm, Johnny Moose Farm, Stockwell Farm, Vanderweele Farm, Turkey Red Cafe and the Matanuska Creamery.

Mark Rempel reports that autumn crops -- potatoes, carrots, parsnips and snow apple turnips -- will be "in abundance" this week. Other items he will have at today's final Northway Mall market and at Saturday's South Anchorage Farmers Market include sugar pumpkins, spaghetti and stripetti squash, lettuces, kales, chard, beet greens and maybe spinach and green onions along with some herbs like dill and cilantro.

Other South Anchorage market vendors include:

• Glacier Valley Farm with carrots, cabbage, artichokes and tomatoes.

• VanderWeele Farms with carrots, beets, broccoli, Yukon gold new potatoes, onions, radishes, red and green cabbage, and cauliflower. They also will have plenty of varieties of lettuce and other nice greens.

• Stockwell Farms has a great selection of new potatoes: red bliss, German butterballs, Yukon golds and others. Other items include sweet onions, green onions, Brussels sprouts, chard and other dark leafy greens.

• Arctic Choice Seafoods will have fresh spot shrimp, halibut, cod, rockfish, coho salmon and live delectable clams and oysters. Frozen seafood includes cod cheeks, razor clam meat, sockeye salmon, halibut, red king crab legs, scallops and side stripe shrimp.

• A.D. Farm will be at today's Northway Mall Market and Saturday's Center Market with eggs, cabbage, carrots, beets, potatoes and kohlrabi. Alex Davis says he will be moving inside the mall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays after the market closes down. Last year, his supplies lasted until the end of February for shoppers looking to buy local.

If you're thinking fresh seafood, FishEx is taking orders for fresh Alaska king crab from Bristol Bay. While the delicacy is pricey, it's something worth considering for a fine meal. The never frozen crab is $28.95 per pound and $30.95 per pound for already split crab. Visit www.FishEx.com or call 770-1660 for information.
