Road trip: If you're tired of Turnagain Arm traffic, try heading north this weekend. Here are five ideas:
Get rich in Caribou Creek: Park at the trailhead at Mile 104 and hike down the steep trail to the creek where recreational gold panning is allowed. Dall sheep, black and grizzly bears and gray wolves have been seen in the area. Find out more at http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/factsht/mine_fs/caribou1.pdf.
Explore Matanuska Glacier: If you haven't done it, you should. If you have, go back because the scenery is always changing. Access through Glacier Park is $15 for adults, with discounts for seniors, military personnel and children. Mica Guides and NOVA offer guided tours for $45 and up.
Scope for Dall sheep: There's a reason it's called Sheep Mountain. Bring your binoculars and stop in a pull-out along the highway. The Dall sheep reserve begins at Mile 107 of the Glenn Highway, on the north side of the road.
Take a guided hike: For $150, Alaska Wilderness Trails will give guided tours along roadside trails for up to six people. Options include Glacier Fan Creek Bed, Lion's Head Mountain, Sheep Mountain Ridge, Gunsight Mountain, Pinochle Trail and Caribou Creek. Find out more at www.backpackak.com.
Stain your tongue blue: Several good blueberry picking spots line the Glenn Highway near Matanuska Glacier. Ask lodge owners for recommendations.
