Business contest deadline Monday
The 2009 Alaska Business Plan Competition has extended its call for business plan entries from Alaska businesses to Monday. This annual event is hosted by the Alaska Pacific University Department of Business Administration, the university's MBA Program and the UAA College of Business and Public Policy to promote and nurture new business growth in Alaska, and to give Alaska business students a chance to shine. The competition is open to both for-profit and nonprofit businesses operating or intending to operate in Alaska.
Each business must be at least part-owned by students or be willing to receive assistance from students as part of the competition. Non-student business owners that are not eligible for the cash prizes will receive exposure to the business community in Anchorage, including financial leaders who sponsor the competition.

Indoor market beats the weather
Market 907 "Alaska's Indoor Flea Market" has opened at 610 W. Fireweed Lane. The 20,000-square-foot site is a site where merchants and food vendors can obtain space to sell their products or services. Robert Alexander has opened the business. He said he grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and always loved going to the flea market on weekends as a young man. "I've always wanted to create a place that promotes the well-being of families within my community, which operates year-round," he said. So regardless of the weather in Alaska outside, it will always be sunny inside Market 907." The site is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Alexander's phone is 229-2053.
Municipal League trains leaders
The Alaska Municipal League's 59th annual Local Government Conference is 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Hotel Captain Cook, 939 W. Fifth Ave.
The Alaska Municipal League provides training on issues facing municipal leaders. The conference also offers networking opportunities between communities and municipal officials. $300-$375.

Trade Center focuses on students
World Trade Center Alaska and the Anchorage School District recently renewed a school-business partnership to help local public high school students better understand Alaska's role in the international economy.
The Trade Center will host students its annual statewide economic forecast luncheon as well as international-focused conferences and seminars it conducts, the Anchorage-based center said. It also will offer mentorship opportunities to students.

Porcaro wins silver merit awards
Porcaro Communications, an Anchorage advertising agency, won five silver awards in the International Davey Awards, a competition for advertising and communications firms.
In determining Gold and Silver winners, entries are judged on their merits based on a standard of excellence as determined by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA).
This year Porcaro won five silver awards in two categories: Business to Consumer: GCI - Rural Wireless Winter Camp, Wireless Radio Campaign and DS Snail Radio Campaign. Porcaro took two other silver awards in the Internet Services category for GCI's "Milkman" and "Stockbroker."
LifeMed gets CAMTS certification
LifeMed Alaska LLC is now one of the 150 programs worldwide to earn accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. CAMTS awards this certification to air medical services that "provide the highest possible quality to their constituents" and demonstrate that their main priorities are "patient care and safety of the transport environment."
