Grants for Alaska total nearly $44 million
The Alaska congressional delegation recently announced the following business-related federal grants:
$14.5 million for improvements at the Atka airport.
$10 million to rehabilitate taxiways G and E, renovate the terminal and acquire snow-removal equipment at Anchorage's international airport.
$4.6 million to extend the runway and runway safety area and to construct a snow removal equipment building for the Kongiganak airport.
$4.5 million for runway lighting improvements at the Cordova airport.
$615,805 from the Maritime Administration to upgrade Alaska Ship and Drydock of Ketchikan.
$115,000 for Gulf of Alaska Keeper and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to remove and dispose of marine debris in Prince William Sound.
$41,750 to buy and renovate a recycling facility that provides work and training opportunities for handicapped and developmentally disabled Kodiak Island residents.
$9.5 million in Indian housing block grants for affordable housing activities -- $5.1 million to the Northwest Inupiat Housing Authority, $1.4 million to the Aleutian Housing Authority, $1.4 million to the Metlakatla Housing Authority, $727,602 to the Nome Eskimo Community, $391,238 to the village of Kwinhagak, $249,380 to the village of Selawik, $175,635 to the Chilkoot Indian Association and $48,660 to the village of Karluk.
Denali Visions owners honored for success
The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that David Coleman, Jason Motyka and Marc Boghosian, owners of Denali Visions 3000, which runs the Denali Park Salmon Bake, have been selected as the 2008 SBA Alaska Small Business Persons of the Year.
During the three years since the team incorporated its business and leased the facilities on a shoestring budget, the business has shown a 350 percent increase in revenue over the previous owners' best year and added 65 new full- and part-time seasonal jobs to the area, the administration said in a news release.
Sahara will dish up Middle Eastern fare
Sahara, a restaurant serving Middle Eastern cuisine, has opened at 2409 C St. The restaurant features traditional dishes such as falafel, hummus and kebabs as well as Alaska entrees that include halibut, salmon and caribou sausage.
