Cook Inlet gets ACS cable
Alaska Communications System has begun laying its new fiber-optic cable in Cook Inlet, the Anchorage telecom company said. Numerous vessels and divers are expected to be laying the cable in upper Cook Inlet and in areas off Homer over the summer, ACS said. The cable ultimately will extend to Oregon. The work in the upper Inlet began Wednesday. Dive operations and related vessel traffic are occurring between the Point Woronzof area of Anchorage and Nikiski, ACS said.
In Homer, construction from the shoreline to Kennedy Passage and the Slope Conservation Area was to begin Sunday, ACS said, limiting beach access above Main Street for two to three days. The work, involving barge, tug and cable-ship traffic and commercial divers, should end in early August.
