Alaska consumers need to pay attention to details with a gas card program promising cheaper fuel, the Better Business Bureau warned Tuesday.
The MyGallons prepaid card when first offered said buyers could lock in current gas prices when they pay an annual membership fee and put money on the card. The Better Business Bureau, though, says the company has since lost business relations with key gas stations and can't keep that promise.
The consumer-watchdog agency first became aware of MyGallons on July 1. The annual membership fee for the card is $29.95 to $39.95, depending on the program.
According to the company's Web site, it hopes to relaunch the product after it secures business partnerships.
The bureau warns, though, that consumers may be left with worthless cards if they buy them now.
Similar programs in the Northeast last year for prepaid natural gas purchases resulted in several companies leaving customers without their gas or their money, the bureau said.
Customers should carefully read and understand all terms and conditions when purchasing the product, the bureau said.
