5 businesses honored for going greener
Green Star, an Anchorage nonprofit that promotes recycling, has awarded five businesses with the Green Star Award certification for their environmental programs:
Capitol Glass Northern Windows recently upgraded all of its lighting, saving an estimated $500 per year in energy costs. Capitol Glass has also instituted numerous waste-preventing initiatives in its manufacturing process.
Two staff members with AES Operations & Maintenance, on the North Slope, created a Green Team to organize fellow employees. The effort includes expanded recycling, increased efforts to raise awareness among staff, use of wind-generated power for traffic signals, and distribution of mugs, lunch bags and water bottles to employees to reduce the use of disposable items.
Total Reclaim's employees bike to work almost every day. The company also helps educate the community about recycling by presenting information in schools, villages and conferences, and providing training on proper shipping procedures for recyclables.
Camai B&B and Alaska's North Country Castle B&B are both involved in introducing green business concepts through their involvement in the Anchorage Alaska B&B Association. Their efforts led to the creation of the association's Going Green Program.
