Denali, The Alaska Gas Pipeline LLC, is expanding its fieldwork to the North Slope, according to Petroleum News. The pipeline company jointly owned by BP and Conoco Phillips has received a state permit to start hydrology studies along the Dalton Highway and Yukon Pacific Corp. right of way between Galbraith Lake and Prudhoe Bay.

Through the studies, the company will collect information about the streams and rivers that would be crossed by a natural gas pipeline running into Canada. That pipeline is competing with a similar state-sponsored effort by TransCanada. Denali opened a field office this summer to support work between Tok and the Canadian border, which hasn't been studied as thoroughly as the corridor of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in the northern part of the state. The trans-Alaska oil pipeline corridor, which includes the Dalton Highway in many places, is often called the most studied piece of land in the state.

Northern Air retires DC-6s

Northern Air Cargo said it will retire its last two Douglas DC-6 aircraft from its active fleet at the end of September. The aircraft type has been the backbone of the Anchorage cargo line's operations since 1969. Northern Air once operated 15 DC-6 aircraft. It has been adding Boeing 737-200 jets to its feet, including three last year. David Karp, company president, said Northern Air will donate one DC-6 to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum to be placed on exhibit. The DC-6s were built in the 1950s, Northern Air said. The airline provides cargo service to 15 destinations.
