VA Clinic, office to have 190,000 square feet

WHAT: The new Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic and Regional Office is under construction near the Muldoon entrance to Elmendorf Air Force Base. The two-story building will be 190,000 square feet and will connect to a pedestrian walkway to the 3rd Medical Group hospital, the hospital at Elmendorf. The new facility will offer primary care, mental health, specialty care, an ambulatory surgery suite, radiology, laboratory, dental, pharmacy and other services. It will also provide physical therapy offices which the VA had previously contracted out. The new clinic will replace current operations -- a 112,000-square-foot building at the Alaska Regional Hospital campus.

Since 2002, the number of veterans seen by the Alaska VA Health Care System and number of visits have continually increased. In the federal budget year that just ended, the Alaska VA served 14,451 veterans, compared to 12,300 veterans in fiscal year 2002.

WHEN: This project is scheduled for completion during spring 2010.
