Local jeweler Ron Hightower won a third-place award at the recent Gemvision Design Symposium near Chicago in Schaumburg, Ill. A crowd of more than 300 participants were on hand representing 15 countries worldwide and 36 U.S. states. Ron is the owner of Lonely Mountain Jewelry of Anchorage.

Credit Union 1 has announced the recent promotions of Tyler Hasbrouck, Kelly Smith and Victoria Willis. Hasbrouck, the former assistant manager of the Member Service Center, has been promoted to manager. Hasbrouck joined the credit union in 2003 as a teller and worked his way up as consumer loan officer trainee, loan officer, and Member Service Center loan officer before being chosen for Member Service Center management. Smith is the new Downtown branch manager. He was hired in 2005 as a teller and has since worked as a member services assistant and member service officer. Willis is the new Federal Building branch manager. She joined the CU1 team in 2004 as a teller and was later promoted to consumer loan administrative clerk, administrative processor and assistant branch manager.

The law firm of Delaney Wiles Inc. recently hired Scott Gerlach, and Kendra Bowman as associate attorneys. Gerlach received his J.D., cum laude, from Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, Ky. Scott was previously employed with the Anchorage office of Birch Horton Bittner & Cherot. Bowman received her J.D. from Creighton University School of Law. She worked previously as an assistant public defender in Omaha, Neb. She also worked as a judicial law clerk for Judge Stephanie Joannides, Anchorage Superior Court. Both associates are members of the Alaska Bar Association.

R&M Consultants Inc. has hired Lance DeBernardi, P.E. as a senior project engineer in the surface transportation group, and Kristen Keifer, E.I.T., Ryan Redick, E.I.T. and Beau Obrigewitch, E.I.T. as staff engineers in our civil engineering and construction services departments. DeBernardi is a senior civil engineer with 18 years of experience. Keifer holds a bachlor of science degree in civil engineering. Since joining R&M, she has been involved in several design and construction administration projects. Redick also holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He has been involved in several design and construction administration projects, including the Aleknagik Wood River Bridge, and the Kotzebue Shore Avenue design. Obrigewitch received his B.S. in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and has been involved in construction administration projects in Alaska's Bristol Bay Region.

At a recent convention of Alaska Nurse Practitioners Association, three members were honored. Gail McGuill, RN, NEA-BC, was recognized with the special Visionary Award. McGuill was executive administrator of the Alaska State Board of Nursing from 1980 to 1994 and oversaw most of the landmark legislation and regulations that affected nurse practitioner practice including regulations that resulted in independent practice and independent prescriptive privileges for nurse practitioners. Constance Trollan, ANP, received the 2008 Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award for her leadership in the profession and excellence in clinical practice. Anna Boutwell, BSN, RN, was awarded the Education Grant for 2008. Boutwell is from Soldotna and enrolled in her first year of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at UAA.

The University of Alaska Anchorage's Office of Advancement has announced that Sally Archer, the newest member of the advancement team, recently was successful in renewing her Certified Fund Raising Executive certification. CFRE International certifies fundraising professionals who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and commitment to the highest standards of ethical and professional practice in philanthropic fundraising.

Suzanne Downing Yack joined the staff of The Alaska Community Foundation as a program officer. Yack will focus her efforts on working with Alaska's communities to help them increase their philanthropic giving in support of a community asset building initiative supported by ACF and the Rasmuson Foundation. The initiative has resulted in community-based efforts to build endowment funds in seven communities throughout Alaska.

The Rasmuson Foundation announces two staff additions: Barbara Bach was named director of grant management. Prior to joining the foundation, Bach was CFO and COO for DataFlow/Alaska Inc., a computer services contractor for the federal government, and CEO for Biopar LLC, an Alaskan R&D startup. Aleesha Towns-Bain is a new program associate. She has a background in journalism and public relations and was most recently the editor of the Crested Butte News, a weekly newspaper in Colorado.

URS Corporation's Alaska Operations is pleased to welcome Kimberly Wetzel. Wetzel is an environmental planner with seven years' experience in NEPA compliance, regional planning, and waste management. Kim holds a bachelor of arts degree in earth and environmental science and a master of science degree in resource policy and behavior. Wetzel will work in the planning department.
