A federal appeals court has ordered the Minerals Management Service to take another look at Shell Oil's offshore drilling plan for Alaska's Beaufort Sea.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today said the MMS approved the drilling plan without a hard enough look at the effects on whales and subsistence hunting and fishing.
Attorney Rebecca Noblin of the Center for Biological Diversity says reconsideration could include an in-depth environmental review.
Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith says the company will comment after a review of the decision.
Attorney Eric Jorgensen of Earthjustice says the decision confirms that the Bush administration rushed to approve drilling in the Arctic Ocean without a full review of the effects.
