Former NASA astronaut and 1983 West High School graduate Bill Oefelein took the flag into space with him in 2006.

On Tuesday, a replica of the orange and black flag featuring the words "West Anchorage High School" was raised at the school during a ceremony attended by Oefelein's parents.

The Oefeleins say their son became increasingly interested in science when he attended West.

The actual flag that flew on the mission hangs in the school office.
