WEEKLONG FORECAST: Minus 20s pay short visit to east part of town at night.
Sunday was the coldest day of the winter so far, and the rest of the week will be as cold or colder, according to the National Weather Service.
A high pressure system, clear and icy, rolled over Southcentral and the Interior on Sunday, bringing subzero temperatures to most of the state.
In Anchorage, temperatures ranged from a few degrees below to the negative 20s at night in East Anchorage.
Nighttime temperatures in the Interior dipped into the minus 30s and 40s.
This week should continue bright and clear with temperatures in the single digits or low teens, dipping below zero at night, according to the Weather Service.
All this make it a little colder than normal in Anchorage, according to Andy Brown, a Weather Service meteorologist. The average high temperature this time of year is usually around 20 and the average low is 10, he said. Still, this week of below-zero temperatures isn't out of the ordinary.
"We do get these cold snaps," he said. "This pattern is going to stay with us most of the week if not through the weekend."
Winds tonight and tomorrow will make it colder. With wind chill, temperatures will sink into the negative 30s.
It's expected to warm slightly toward the end of the week with a few clouds, bringing daytime temperatures between 0 and 15 degrees on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, according to the Weather Service forecast.
