At midday today, Anchorage officer Roger Wilson was on the Glenn Highway monitoring traffic. He said the problem is that drivers need to slow down because there is a thin layer of ice.

"It's black ice, the whole Glenn highway," he said.

Mainly drivers are losing control when they change lanes because of the ruts in the road, he said. The area between the Birchwood exits is the worst.

There were also several accidents on the Seward Highway coming into town, according to Dave Parker, Anchorage Police Department spokesman.

Between 6 p.m. Monday night and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, there were three accidents with injuries, 24 other accidents and 48 vehicles in the ditch, Parker said.
