WHITTIER -- State transportation officials say the Portage Glacier Highway will reopen on a limited schedule, starting Friday. The reopening is possible after crews successfully removed unstable rock along the highway in an ongoing effort to clear the only road to Whittier.
The highway has been closed since a massive rock slide on April 11. Large boulders hanging over the highway were the holdup. Officials say the rock was rotten with numerous fissures.
Officials say beginning Friday, pilot cars will escort single-lane traffic through the slide area. This will continue until two-lane traffic is re-established.
The limited road openings will be from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
