A small wildfire in East Anchorage on Saturday evening drew a big response from firefighters, including a new wildfire-fighting helicopter. Flames were reported just before 6 p.m. in the northern part of Russian Jack Springs Park, near the Glenn Highway between Pine Street and Boniface Parkway. A plume of dark smoke was visible through much of the city.
The fire spread quickly and additional firefighters were called in along with the helicopter, which dropped water from the air.
The fire was put under control just before 6:30, but firefighters were on the scene for another hour putting out hot spots, dispatchers said.
The cause had not been determined.
