A Spenard house fire caused about $20,000 in damage early Saturday morning and another blaze in a Girdwood duplex displaced five people, according to the Anchorage Fire Department and the Alaska Red Cross. A fire department statement said 10 units responded to the Spenard fire shortly before 5 a.m. and found smoke and heat coming from the basement of the home. The blaze was out in about 10 minutes.
Red Cross spokeswoman Kelly Hurd said the Girdwood fire also happened early Saturday. That fire displaced four adults and an infant, and the agency was helping with food and clothing, she said.
