A woman on a school bus was injured Monday afternoon when a stray BB-gun pellet struck the bus, Anchorage police said.
The woman, Faauma Tuiolemotu, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of the injury, which was described as not serious. The injury may have been from the BB itself or flying glass, Anchorage police Lt. Dave Parker said.
Three teens were target practicing in a backyard at around 1:45 p.m. when the school bus happened to be behind the backyard and was turning the corner from Old Seward Highway onto Brandon Street, police said.
The boys were supervised by an adult and fully cooperated with police, Parker said. "Everyone was surprised and didn't realize one of the BBs had gone astray," he said.
It is a misdemeanor crime to shoot any kind of gun in city limits except at designated places, like shooting ranges. Police are forwarding the information about the incident to the McLaughlin Youth Center to see if the boys should be charged.
Even though school does not start until Wednesday, the bus was practicing its route at the time of the incident, the school district said. The woman hit was not the driver but an attendant on the bus.
