A pedestrian was hit and killed early Sunday morning on the Glenn Highway, police say.

The collision occurred just after midnight in the inbound lane of the highway, just south of the South Peters Creek exit, said Lt. Dave Parker, a police spokesman. The investigation closed the highway southbound until about 4:50 a.m.

As of Sunday night, police had not released the man's name. He was hit by a Ford Taurus driven by 20-year-old Heather Pollock of Wasilla.

The man was struck while walking in the passing lane of the highway, Parker said.

"It's a very dark section of the roadway," Parker said. "He was wearing dark clothing, and that's where they've just done all of the repaving and everything -- so the whole place is very, very dark."

Someone had reported a man walking inbound next to the highway north of the North Birchwood exit just before the accident -- at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

A caller said the man wore dark clothing and carried a cane.

"He was apparently on and off the roadway," Parker said.

A police officer dispatched to the area didn't see the pedestrian and made an unrelated traffic stop, Parker said. Soon after, another police officer spotted cars stopped in the roadway and discovered the collision.

Rescuers tried to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead at a local hospital, according to police.
