Two cousins have been put on three years of federal probation for shipping liquor to the village of Gambell, which has banned importation and sale of alcohol.
Willis Walunga, 35, bought six bottles of liquor in Anchorage and mailed them to James Walunga, 29, in Gambell, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
Willis Walunga certified the package did not contain alcohol when he mailed it, but it broke open during shipping and postal authorities discovered otherwise, said a written statement from federal prosecutors.
Sentence was handed down Monday by U.S. Magistrate Judge John Roberts, who said local communities have the right to exclude alcohol if they wish. The Walungas were convicted of conspiracy to mail intoxicating liquors.
