Alaska State Troopers say 51-year-old George R. "Rick" Abare tried to strangle his girlfriend three times early Tuesday and twice tried to pull her into a bonfire at the Jan Lake Campground near Tok.

Troopers say he also threatened her with a large knife.

Abare, whose driver's license is revoked, then drove 100 miles west on the Alaska Highway with the woman and continued to assault her, at one point pushing a puppy against her and causing the animal to squeal.

The woman escaped near Delta Junction and hid at a rest stop. Abare was stopped by troopers 23 miles from Delta Junction.
