The getaway vehicle used in a fatal shooting in the parking lot of the Sports Authority yesterday has been found abandoned not far from the scene, Anchorage police said today.
The green 1997 Toyota Camry was found last night along Old Seward Highway near Dimond Center mall, police Lt. Dave Parker said. The suspects were gone and police impounded the vehicle, which did not appear to have been reported stolen, he said.
Police offered no suspect descriptions but said the investigation was continuing.
Joe Alfred Young Jr., 23, was gunned down in broad daylight in the parking lot on Old Seward near Dimond about 1:10 p.m. yesterday. He was struck in the neck and chest and was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. He died there a short time later.
Young was in the back seat of a gray Ford Explorer when gunshots burst through the rear windows. One witness said she saw two men approach the Explorer. One had a rifle and was shooting into the driver's side, the other was at the passenger side breaking a window.
The motive for the shooting remained unknown.
