Anchorage resident Fabian Quepons, 23, was charged with a count of first-degree assault and two of third-degree assault in connection with the shooting that occurred about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Sand Lake, according to police.

Police say Quepons was driving a teal Cadillac Escalade when someone in a passing vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Anchorage resident Jamie Watson, recognized him and told Watson to follow him, police Lt. Dave Parker said. They told police they just wanted to talk to Quepons, he said.

Quepons pulled into a parking lot near Shady Birch Place and Strawberry Road, and Watson began pulling her vehicle up alongside it, getting as far as having her front bumper being aligned with the rear of Quepons', Parker said.

"As they were pulling up on him in the parking lot, he opens up on them," Parker said. "No words exchanged. I don't know why or what his issues were."

One of the shots hit Watson in the head. The two passengers in her vehicle, a man and a woman, were not injured.

When police arrived, Watson was still conscious, breathing and able to speak and was transported to a hospital, Parker said. The bullet caused entry and exit wounds to her head but the injuries were not life-threatening and she was expected to be fine, he said.

"Apparently they didn't penetrate any vital areas," he said.

Quepons turned himself in at police headquarters about 12:30 p.m. Monday, police said. He was booked at the Anchorage jail with bail set at $25,000.

Police say they are still looking for the Escalade Quepons was driving. Anyone with information on its whereabouts should call police at 786-8900.
