Men who took 6-year-old up Flattop found drunk, police say

Two hikers who took a 6-year-old on an evening trip to Flattop Mountain are facing criminal charges after they failed to return when expected and were later found drunk, Anchorage police said. Police were called about 2:20 a.m. Saturday morning by a woman who said her husband, his brother and her 6-year-old child hadn't returned from a hike up the mountain above Anchorage, Lt. Dave Parker said in a written statement.

The men and the child had headed up Flattop around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. They were wearing only light clothing and weren't prepared to spend the night, Parker said.

Police launched what Parker called "a hasty search" and started coordinating with Alaska State Troopers. They were also making preparations to have an Alaska Air National Guard helicopter assist.

The initial search team found the hikers around 4:55 a.m. Saturday morning.

"Both adults were intoxicated when found by officers," Parker wrote, adding later that they had failed field sobriety tests.

The men, identified as Byron Pastinak, 34, and Ken Pastinak, 31, were charged with reckless endangerment.

Both were being held in the Anchorage Jail on $500 cash bail.
