NIKISKI -- A group of sixth-graders on a field trip this week came across what could be ancient bones that had been unearthed on a Nikiski beach, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The students called officials after finding a lower jaw bone Tuesday afternoon, and troopers responding to the scene found other bones partially exposed in a beach-side bluff, Soldotna trooper Jeremy Grieme said.
The body had been buried several feet underground but apparently became exposed during erosion of the surrounding hillside.
"This does not look like it was even a remotely recent burial," Grieme said.
Troopers collected some of the unearthed remains and contacted the medical examiner, who, with input from an anthropologist, determined the remains most likely belonged to an ancient Native individual, he said. It was not clear how long ago the person was buried.
Troopers were working to contact the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, which would decide how to handle the remains, he said.
